It was out first experience in a ryokan and we couldn't be more pleased! The reception was smooth and came with complimentary tea and snacks, and the staff clearly explained the facilities and it's many onsens. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor onsen as well as the standing onsen.
The location is great, just a short walk to explore the rest of Kurokawa Onsen, and the famous Patisserie Roku is just down the steps. Dinner was excellent and gently paced, and the grounds are really magical at night. The fluffy futon was laid out during dinner and we all had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was also delicious!

Lovely cabin with two big rooms in a wooded location on a hillside. We would have been happy with only one room but the owner (who spoke English) thought that was too small! There was also a veranda to sit on but it was too cold in November. There was a sink and a toilet in both rooms. There was a private bath big enough for 2 in a cabin 10m away.
The food was amazing. Really top notch cooking. Deserved a Michelin star! Don’t miss out on the food. I think it was 3,800 yen for dinner.

Getting around is easiest with a car, but note that it's a small mountain town so roads can be narrow--a smaller rental car would be a good choice for visiting tourists. There's not a lot of convenience shops but local produce is glorious and cheap. You can do many hiking/walking daytrips based here into the Kuju mountains and Aso area. We visited in spring, so roads were clear but I'm not sure how conditions would be in winter.

This small town was very tranquil and relaxing with many hot spring baths available to experience and enjoy. Easy to walk around and visit the many small shops in the town. The Okyakuya Inn, which I stayed at, was perfect with a traditional tatami room and futons and both dinner and breakfast course meals were delicious serving dishes made with local ingredients. The staff were also great and friendly.

What I like most is the countryside surrounding and nice peoples. What I may want the area to improve is/are : more shops, don't close so early, if possible, pls get one convenient store, and lastly roads are very narrow, so driver must be careful.

The view, and the vibe surrounding aso and this region is just beautiful. Aka-ushi(red beef) tasted phenomenal, and would visit again. Would stay around Kurokawa Onsen, the next time since the first visit there was much better in terms of the aesthetics.

Great place to go onsen hopping.
Great place to go onsen hopping. Lots of ryokans with different types of onsens to chose from. Easier to get to in a car but not impossible by local buses. This area is in the Aso National Park. Lots of walk trails and beautiful weather in November.

It’s a bit unfair going there you get this amazing view of the area very steep mountains alongside lakes and riverbeds. Then when you are finally driving home, you get slap with a different view of the mountains and lakes riverbeds but it’s 10x better than you remember from driving up. It will be very hard to leave.
