Elmbank Hotel - Part of The Cairn Collection, hotel in Hessay

A boutique Art Nouveau hotel in historic York. Minutes from the heart of the city, overlooking the Knavesmire Strays, lies the Elmbank Hotel, a unique 19th-century mansion with a rich history.

Everything, it felt really special. The decor had been thoughtfully done and felt very opulent.

No 1 by GuestHouse, York, hotel in Hessay

A boutique hotel in the heart of York just a 10-minute walk from York Minster.

Location was great for everything we wanted to do, breakfast was hit and miss and the room we stayed was OK- had the air conditioner breaking down but the staff were on it asap. There was NO fridge in the room so very difficult to keep the milk or anything that needed a fridge for it! The Pearl Cow restaurant is a definite must to visit- amazing dinner!!

The approach to the property is off a main road (York to Harrogate) and is difficult to see. The drive into the property is narrow and twists and turns through trees, Signs on the door are not that welcoming, particularly an instruction to take off shoes when entering. Had we been just passing traffic looking for a B&B rather than having already paid, we would have turned around and gone on to somewhere else. The whole property which includes a small lake is very heavily wooded. Once inside however it is most satisfactory apart from the lack of space for opening luggage.
