Alma Chilota is an excellent boutique hotel in Castro, with the bonus of giving guests the experience of staying in a palafito. The staff were very welcoming, and always ready to answer questions or help provide recommendations. The room was spotless, and the linens were fresh, and clean, and smelled amazing. The bathroom was a little bit tight for my tall husband, but it was also clean and the water was hot with great pressure. Breakfast offerings were fairly extensive for such a small hotel, and included meat, cheese, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bread & toast, sweet cakes, and eggs cooked to order. Coffee was always hot and ready to go around the clock, and hot water and hot milk were also available for tea drinkers. Watching the sea lions and dolphins play in the fjord was also amazing. Several excellent dinner locations are located just a few steps away along the same road.

I'd been to Castro several times, but this was my first during high season, and I'd advise travelers that unless you like sitting in backed-up traffic ('taco') for long stretches, just avoid Castro from mid-January to late February, when trying to drive from anywhere north of Castro to anywhere south of Castro can take hours. November-December are great, however, and I'm told March is the best month of all. By and large, Chiloé's charms are not to be found in the cities.

Castro is a really charming and very laid back place despite being the largest town on the island of Chiloe. It's a wonderful place to chill out, and there is some beautiful countryside in the vicinity. Next time when I go back, I'd like to rent a bike and explore the countryside more leisurely (this time I had a car).

I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why!
I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why! Castro was charming, a nice mix of history and local culture. The municipal museum was informative, the UNESCO heritage churches were really interesting, the palafitos--houses on stilts along the waterfront--were very colorful. The weather can be quite variable--I had two sunny, nice days and three rainy cold ones--so travelers need to bring a variety of clothing choices. Well worth a visit!

The famous church is way better looking on the inside.
The famous church is way better looking on the inside. Not much going on in the town itself, but a pleasant stop on the way, or base for other day trips. Highly recommend Nórdica Cafe for empanadas and sandwiches!
This is a fantastic hotel, with a fantastic staff, especially Elena, who was a star!! The location is meh within Castro, but great within the island. Breakfast was AMAZING, and they had freshly made bread every morning, eggs and all sorts of delicacies. The views from all terraces in the hotel are great too.
Kudos to the staff who made us dinner at 23h in the night because we arrived too late and too hungry. Excellent, outstanding service.
It is such a lovely colourful and alegre (cheerful!) place to stay. There is local artwork all over the rooms giving it such a unique vibe. The bedroom was lovely and the bed is probably the most comfortable one i’ve stayed in for months. It even had a heated blanket!
The host Miguel is so lovely and gives lots of detailed plans of what to do in the area, with buses etc. He basically planned my whole time there for me which was so great!
Staff was awesome, restaurant was OK, good service and tasty, I'd probably like more options to choose from the menu. Breakfast was fine, view is great. The hotel upgraded me after complaining for the room, so overall the staff took good care of me and my family. Exterior hot tubs are good, with a great view but time restrictions apply due to covid and 2/3 of them were in operation. It's quiet enough to get a pretty comfortable sleep.
The Lodge is in an incredible location. If you are a nature lover, this is the place for you! The lodge and park guides help to make the visit an adventure and a learning experience. Night hikes, boating to a remote hiking area, trails that are easily accessible were especially appreciated. The lodge is warm, comfortable, and welcoming. We would absolutely send friends and family to stay here. Not t be missed on a trip to Chiloe!
This is a great place to stay in Castro. Nice location, great staff, in particular Pamela was amazingly helful and kind, very comfortable beds, nice breakfast and beautifully decorated common areas. The two rooms with views on the bay are also beautiful, the other rooms have not the same charm but are very convenient. We loved this place and would come back any time!
Location is great to be close to downtown Castro and sea port, being able to walk to most places in downtown. That means you suffer from traffic when you want to leave the city for other tours. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast buffet excellent. The restaurant for dinner was also very good and with reasonable prices.
Everything was fine at Hotel Esmeralda : the location, the staff.
We were entitled a room with no view at all : it was such a wall behind the window ; I just asked if we could change room and they granted us another room viewing the street. This one was noisy but we preferred the have a view on something...
Clean, quiet and comfortable self-sufficient cabins on a beautiful, tree-filled property with a small stream and waterfall. We especially liked the small walking trails. It was a great location with quick access to Castro and a good position for day trips to the island’s West Coast.
That it was well positioned in a quiet residential neighborhood, close to the heart of Castro. Plus, all areas of Chiloe Island are easily reached from this central location. Nice to be able to stay multiple nights in the same comfortable facility.
The best thing about the house is the location, you can see the falling on the hill and enjoy the Chiloe´s weather. The road toward the house is not paved only 200mts. Try to rent a suv, not a small car. In our case, we rent a van.
Excellent breakfast. Scenic waterfront location, short walk to town center. Glennie, the manager, is extremely helpful and friendly. Cozy and well-decorated common area features a balcony over the water. Street parking only.
The staff is awesome, can't complain, they gave us tips, told us more about Castro and the surrounding areas, even drove us to the bus station at the end of our stay! They really made an effort to make us feel welcomed.
