There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
Excellent historic hotel (built 1942) in the centre of Salta (therefore excellent location). We had stayed previously and had an executive room at the back with a wonderful view. Even though we had a cheaper executive room at the front this time it was still very good and we did not notice any street noise. The breakfast is good ( coffee not so good), some channels on TV had subtitled English films. A private car park and behind it a pool set in its own area. Bath in bathroom, fridge and good wifi, old air conditioner but efficient.
Great hostel in Salta. Located on a calm street, a few minutes away from the main square.
They have all amenities I needed: kitchen, fast wifi, good clean shower and a comfortable bed. The room doesn’t get too hot even in summer.
The owner is the sweetest person on Earth! He made my stay very comfortable and helped with some problems I had. He even invited me to his home to eat freshly made empanadas! When you are traveling alone, feeling welcome is very important.
Thank you!
Best place we stayed in salta (and we had to hop around a bit since it was a holiday week). Great location for food and checking out local peña or even for a walk downtown.
Apartment was so comfortable with everything you would need for even a stay of a few weeks. Host was very kind and tried his best to assist in whatever we needed.
Loved the keypad entry so we didn't need to worry about losing keys.
This small, cozy hotel had very nice, comfortable rooms, spacious bathrooms, and a beautiful outdoor garden with a small pool. Situated in walking distance to the main plaza and many restaurants. Staff were wonderful (thank you again for all your help and for making us feel so welcome). Best of all was the cat that hangs around the hotel, which made himself at home in our room one evening!
This is such a gem! The hotel is great, and the staff very helpful. It has all the facilities that you need during a short stay such as a little gym and a pool. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. The hotel is also located on a quite side street. Easy access to all the main tourist attractions. Try the massage! the Massage therapist was wonderful!
Fantastic location very close to the main square. Very quiet and safe , lovely boutique hotel vibe . We used the hotel as a base for trips around the region, staying on three separate occasions, and each time we returned the staff made us so welcome. There was a convenient car park immediately next door. Nice pasties and fruit salad at breakfast.
Great staff! Very friendly and accommodating. The location is very near to the main plaza as well as the street with all the Peña bars and also has a fantastic restaurant beside it. It's quiet, comfortable, and has filtered water (very necessary, Salta is hot!).
The private rooms have a little fridge, and the shared kitchen looks well supplied.
Staff was in good humor and helpful (although not very responsive over the chat prior to checkin). Location is amazing, 1 block away from the main city square where you find the church and museums. Room are great in size, shower was nice and we could park our car at the hotel premises. I would recommend and stay here again.
Everything! One of our favorite boutique hotel stays anywhere in the world. The staff are incredibly kind, helpful, and speak perfect English. The hotel is modern, impeccably designed, and spotlessly clean. The rooms are quiet. The beds are comfortable. The shower pressure is strong. The location is central.
The staff was ABOVE & BEYOND kind and helpful. Oh my goodness. Alejandro and Lautaro were just the best. Even when I didn't need something from the front desk, I always made sure to stop by and talk to them because they're so warm & friendly. I would for sure stay there again. Location is unbeatable, too.
The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was a little bit smal, but very authentically and charming regarding style. They served local breakfast upon request, with freshly pressed orange juice. The give us a lot of tips for the rest of our road trip in Chile and Argentina.
Hotel Colonial Salta is a charming small hotel located downtown, in Plaza 9 de Julio. You will live in an old building, with all the facilities, decorated with stylish furniture. The architecture is amazing, and the atmosphere is one of the best I have seen in my travels.
Great location, right near Plaza de Julio that has restaurants and a lot of shops around it. The staff are nice and helpful, bed was really comfy with air conditioning and very clean.
Overall a great stay and value for money and Salta is a great city, really enjoyed it
So it’s not my first time in selina, been to a couple and as always it delivered. However this time was exceptional. Guille and the staff were so kind and helpful, the facilities were great and the room too. definitely the best place to stay in salta.
Very quiet location at the edge of Salta with everything you need and more. The host is amazing and she gave me tips to enjoy my stay in Salta even more.
Unbeatable stay for the price.
