Provincial capital and robust market town. A solid middle class city not built on tourism. Udon Thani provides a much more authentic Thai experience than tourist hubs like Chiang Mai. Public transport is weak and it helps to be a vigorous walker. If you want an authentic experience, this is the place. But if you prefer a huge selection of shops, restaurants, cafes and night markets that cater to western tourists, Chiang Mai is your place.
