The hotel is not fancy, but with all comfort you need and then some extras - spacious rooms with big windows, very comfortable large beds, a real Japanese hot spring bath "onsen" in the premises, yukata bath robes, green tea on self-service, spacious restaurant with huge windows and diverse menu (Japanese breakfast options and Western breakfast options), large parking, quiet location yet easy access. All this for a very reasonable price.

Karuizawa offers an amazing small town charm with excellent food, friendly people, and accessible nature. Definitely check out the Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel tour to view Musasabi! The only downside to this beautiful town is that it's a bit more pricey than the rest of Japan.

We would definitely go back.
We would definitely go back. Just around an hour by Shinkansen from Tokyo, Karuizawa is the perfect place if you want the laid-back, nature-embraced, old-town feel. Just strolling around town is cool enough but they have a lot of museums and galleries too, that the whole family enjoyed! Also got to try skiing for the first time. Overall, this is one place that we will always be included if we go in the Tokyo area again in the future.

A wonderful destination if you like fresh mountain air, lovely tree-lined roads, cycling, etc. Many useful bus routes and also Shinano Railway next to the Shinkansen that goes to Naka-Karuizawa and way beyond. Note that many restaurants close early, especially out of season. Many well-known restaurants need a booking.

Should spend more days in Karuizawa town.
Should spend more days in Karuizawa town. There is a Skiing sport just beside the Prince town outlets and worth for beginner to try and have fun. Walking distance to the old town bring different experiences and its very nice to try walk around and try the foods there. Its worth to go for a relax place. If more days , can travel down to the other town in Karuizawa for skiing and sight seeing. Awesome place to explore.

A European town in a forested mountainous region not far from Kusatsu, Shima onsen, or Tokyo.
The hot springs aren’t anything special but the mountainous scenery and delicious French/Italian food can be a nice change from the usual Tokyo bustle.
Autumn colours are nice, especially just north towards mount Asama.

Nice “garden” style hotel. Old but has been refreshed.
Nice “garden” style hotel. Old but has been refreshed. Like the “Club” room with free drinks (not beer) and games. Large rooms. Breakfast not buffet but “set,” and good enough. Not easy to spot entrance off the main road.
We loved everything!! If you’re traveling by car, this is the place for you. The location is close to all the little attractions and they offer free parking. There is a private onsen (2 of them, actually) that we absolutely loved! The rooms are spacious, extremely clean, and they have floor heating. I would say the best part of the stay was the host, who was incredibly welcoming and friendly (even though our Japanese was very very limited). Don’t forget to get the breakfast option, I promise you will not regret it :)
Beautiful place. The moment you arrive at the hotel you feel a blanket of peace and tranquility coming over you. The staff provided amazing service and speaks well English to explain the necessary items + how to use the onsen.
The room is spacious, clean, and has a beautiful view on the small river. Beautiful bathroom as well and the bed sleeps amazing!
The highlight was the onsen, our first time to do this and we couldn’t pick a better location for this!
The breakfast was world class!
The service was excellent and the staff went out of their way to assist us and make our stay as comfortable as possible. Despite being an upmarket hotel, they were still very accommodating and welcoming of our toddler and there were extra amenities for her which were appreciated. The hotel is situated in the older part of Karuizawa and is within walking distance of many beautiful attractions and restaurants/cafes. The breakfast is also excellent.
Beautiful hotel entrance. Old style building. taxi drop off area is undercover and away from rain or traffic. Great location walking distance to train station south (10 min)and to shopping street north (7 min). Art museum nearby. Indoor and outdoor onsen very good. Our twin room has two queen size beds, comfortable. Great Japanese breakfast with view of snow scene outside.
Absolutely amazing stay. So glad we found this little gem for our stay in karuizawa, couldn't imagine having stayed elsewhere, only regret we have is we couldn't stay longer. Unique country house hotel with amazing food and even better hosts, thank you Chris and Judy and all the staff at Hotel Wellies for everything. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.
Location close to Karuizawa Station (10mins walk via South Exit), & convenience shops (Lawson & Family Mart). We were allowed to leave our luggages at the counter before check-in, and there’s a shuttle van to/from the hotel. Good simple breakfast, reasonable staffs & good room space. Overall, recommended.
The staff, amenities, food and service were excellent. It was our first visit and it exceeded our expectations! It would have been helpful to know that there was a hotel shuttle from the train station to the resort. I don’t believe that was mentioned in the information received from our booking.
I had such a warm welcome from Chris who was extremely helpful in planning my stay in Karuizawa. He cooked me a terrific breakfast and then offered a ride to help reduce the number of kms on my walk the next morning. Such a beautiful location and quite a charming setting - a highlight for me!
This hotel has old world charm, and the location is excellent. It is within walking distance to the Prince Shopping Mall, several small shops, cafes, museums, parks, hiking trails & Ginza Street.
Also, the bathroom is spacious by Japanese standards, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
My second visit to this hotel - wonderful design and a short walk from Karuizawa station. The nearby bus stop is also convenient for exploring the area, nearby waterfalls and Kusatsu onsen. A highlight is definitely the restaurant for course dinner and delicious breakfast options.
Property felt like a Swiss Chalet in Karuizawa but the rooms felt like "Glamping". An interesting concept. Rooms were clean but dated. The website advertises newly renovated rooms but we obviously didn't pay the premium for these rooms so I understand you get what you pay for.
The hotel is in close proximity to the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Centre and the JR Karuizawa Station so getting around was a breeze, especially with the free shuttle service. The room is spacious and the bathroom is very well equipped with all necessary toiletries.
Royal Suite Room is superb! Hotel environment is tranquil and make you feel relaxed. Love the vintage western setting and furnitures and hotel amenities. Staff are very polite and professional! We will definitely go back again if back to Karuizawa.
Very near to Karuizawa train station (around 5 mins walk), and the property is clean and neat.
Love the common area with plenty of books to share on bookshelves (though I can’t read Japanese)
Staffs are helpful and friendly.
Great experience with beautiful decorations, nice staff and comfortable room. The tour around Hoshinoya area is worth to stay a night here. Distance to Karuizawa station is far so highly recommended to take taxi.
We loved the architecture of the hotel, the rustic chic ambience, the Victorian style with a Japanese touch, and the surrounding nature. It's certainly worth staying!
