Nice and clean, onsen baths look out to a garden with maple trees, would be lovely in Autumn. Staff were very accommodating, their English was limited which is common outside the big cities like Tokyo or Kyoto. We used Google translate to communicate and managed to get all the info needed for the trip.

A pleasant city to spend 1-2 nights. However, go only if you are into onsen (hot spring bath). Otherwise, there is really nothing much else to do. If you are the type who do not like public baths, opt for a ryokan with private bath. If your budget permits, opt for the kaiseki meal (set meal) served by the ryokan.
The Beppu Jigoku (Beppu Hells) is too commercialised for my liking. I'd recommend you start with Umi Jigoku and pick 1 or 2 more you like it. All of the "hells" are within walking distance from Umi Jigoku. Otherwise, you can skip the rest and spend more time walking and exploring Kannawa area (look out for Route 218).
The Jigoku Mushi (steamed meal) is not worth the money. You'd be better off patronising a local yakiniku joint - Oita prefecture is famous for its beef, chicken and mushroom; all of these taste great when grilled over charcoal.

Beppu has a great vibe, especially the area around Beppu Station and the area near the "hells". The sight of water vapour rising between all the buildings is truly something. But aside from the hells and the hot springs there is not that much more to do in the city itself. So 2-3 days should definetely be enough for people who have a limited amount of time in Japan. The city of Yufu one hour busride from Beppu and certainly worth a visit. There are a couple of other great places in Oita Prefecture worth visiting but those are a little bit hard to access without a car.

Beppu is one of the best cities I visited, it is a city is in the middle of sea and mountain. There is a lot of Onsen where you can be easy to find around the city, Beppu is called " City of Onsen".
You can relax and release any daily tired at the onsen bath (especially if you bath onsen pool outside)
Furthermore, you can go to viewpoint to see the Beppu city and mountain view.
It is a good memory to visit there.

The seven hells of Beppu (Jigoku) are really great to fill a day. You can have a nice walk along the shoreline and the mall near the bay offers a great shopping opportunity. There are a few good restaurants that you can enjoy. The neighborhood around the Jigoku is quite nice, the rest of Beppu not so much. Two or three days are enough for this town.

We didn't have enough time to see other onsen areas.
We didn't have enough time to see other onsen areas. We did not rent a car so we traveled by bus. We did not get to see the onsen areas as I did want to try some of the other ryokan onsens. The only problem I had was with the stools that you sit on to swcrub yourself.
Buffet dinner is excellent with unlimited orders of wagyu beef and alcoholic drinks. Buffet breakfast was excellent too. Hotel location is within walking distance to the Thermal Hell pools. Though it's location is a little far from the station, there is a free shuttle services for pick up from and drop off to the Beppu station. Staff are friendly. Onsen bath was excellent too. Highly recommended for a relaxing stay !
Hotel Seawave is one of the last authentic “Beppu Onsen ♨️” hotels in Beppu. Nothing about this hotel is fake. The rooms are lived in and comfortable. The Onsen is authentic 1980s style with soothing water and a unique “old school” atmosphere. The breakfast 🍳 is outstanding and the checkout time of 11am allows you to bathe, eat, pack and relax slowly and stress free. Awesome 👏🏻 hotel.
In the heart of Kannawa district, perfect for visiting the Hell ponds of Beppu or enjoying a nighttime onsen. Accessible hot spring bath and sauna on the ground floor of the hotel. Bonus : you het to experience as you wish the "hell steam cooking" (jigokumushi) from a free access kitchen in front of the hotel with three steam ovens. A great experience at a very friendly price
Booked including dinner because there aren't many restaurants near by. We did not expect to be served a 9 course Kaiseki meal. It was delicious and presented beautifully.
The rooms were spacious and very clean, with private Onsen bath on the balcony. Can highly recommend this beautiful Ryokan for a stay in Beppu.
Tasteful and Beautiful room with a excellent view. The beds and pillows were comfortable and we slept extremely well throughout the 5 nights stay. The onsen in the room was really good and the granite tub can easily fit 2 adults. Service is also excellent as typical in most Japanese hotels of this quality.
this Hotel is by the Beppu coast line, the big plus is that it has 3 private onsen which you can book in 1hr slot between 6am - 11am and 5pm-12midnight. 11-5pm the onsens are open to public but i didnt see anyone come in. We stayed in a japanese room/tatami mat but shared toilet.
Close to the Beppu train station. A few mins walk over. It is a very modern design and built hotel come with onsen near the top floor. Also a roof top swimming pool. Nice new modern room, good size and clean facilities. Buffer was great with many selections of food choices.
It is a luxurious resort and I tried multiple times and finally got a room with private onsen and can see sunrise from the room. Really enjoyed our stay. The people there can speak multiple languages so there is no cummunication issue. And the hotel staff were very nice.
This is our second time in this Beautiful hotel,
With an ocean view and very spacious and confortable room including private onsen.
Breakfast offers the best quality western and japanese food we had so far, personel is very helpfull. Strongly recommend this hotel.
Walking distance to the train station. The room was Japanese style, very clean. There's a small fridge in the room. The included breakfast was Japanese style too, with a lot of varieties of food. The hotel is also close to a traditional Japanese onsen bath.
The room is new & clean. Breakfast is nice with varieties of choices. Onsen is nice with private onsen without reservation which is very flexible. Late night ramen, ice cream and ice bars are available. excellent location which is so close to the station.
The location of the hotel is good enough to visit other parts of the town. The onsen facilities are also good for relaxation.
The room has an excellent view of the ocean.
The staff are very friendly and helpful giving guides for city tour.
The hotel was a stone thrown from the station and the center of Beppu. Staff was very helpful and breakfast was very good! The onsen, pool and sauna were great after long days walking. The bed was very comfortable! Highly recommended!
There is many onsen for your choice for this hotel and it can book time in advance. Private onsen is so nice. Breakfast is amazing. Free parking lot, Private bathroom is available. Staff is helpful. Free Shochu in living room.
Really Love this place. Comfortable room with private onsen and very helpful staff. Free car parking as requested. Location is great, located near various Jigoku within walking distance. Nice place to stay in Beppu.
Everything is great! Just across the street from Beppu station. The unique bonus is that you can go for free to their sister hostels’ onsen baths, all 3 of these are nearby and open until late.
Overall a great experience.
Despite being 20 years old, a very well maintained hotel. Very clean, cozy room. A great onsen with rotenburo. Nice breakfast. Very conveniently located.
