Stayed in the quieter village of Kastraki but drove the short distance to adjoining larger town of Kalabaka to see the 11c Byzantine church.
The busier streets of Kalabaka are not overwhelming and offer a contrast to the gentler vibe of Kastraki.
Kalabaka is a commercial centre with busy streets and cafes, some of which continue the improper practice of caging songbirds for the ‘interest’ of customers!
We were pleased we stayed in Kastraki at the Doupiani House Hotel and appreciated the evening strolls through quiet jasmine-scented streets, where we were occasionally accompanied by wandering tortoises or inquisitive local cats.

Meteora was by far, one of our favorite places in Greece.
Meteora was by far, one of our favorite places in Greece. The landscape is unique and amazingly beautiful. The monasteries are incredible pieces of architecture, and the little churches inside, are real jewels of Byzantine art. The sites are really crowded and parking is not easy (and this was in May!!!) also, the churches are so small that sometimes queuing is necessary in order to access them. Even though we checked previously and carefully the opening times, two of the six monasteries could not be visited without any apparent reason, which was very inconvenient for us. The whole region is dedicated to tourism so great hotels and restaurants are everywhere.

The monasteries are lovely but the public transport (bus) to move around them is limited if you only want to visit one or two. Our time was limited so we took the 9am bus up to the main meteron monastery and walked down to Varlaam and Rossenou (St Barbara) convent. We were finished here by 12 but had to walk back to Kalambaka as there was no bus until 14:30 and we had a bus to catch for our onward journey. We walked down to Kastraki and had a quick bite and walked on to Kalambaka. It was an easy walk and took about 40 mins but this was in April so not too hot.

Kalabaka is a city with traditional houses and Meteora is very close. You can visit some of the monasteries. We went to the museum of physical history with animals and birds that lived there, which was very nice, to the mushroom museum and to the digital projection center of Meteora's history and culture. The food also was excellent.
Solo motorbike traveler, I booked the room last minute while i was at Trikala. The night swift receptionist was super friendly and welcoming. Service minded and really helpful. The room was really nice and clean. Next day they even gave me a call to not miss breakfast, in the morning I met the owners and the whole experience was remarkable! Totally recommended, the best stay I had in a 7 days trip, staying at different hotels and locations around Greece! Thank you for the great hospitality!!! :) cheers from Iceland!
This property was outstanding. My husband and I have vacationed in Greece many times, mostly the islands. This property is significantly nicer than most Greek hotels. The quality and workmanship was excellent, the room was also exceptionally well decorated. Our balcony had amazing views over the town and looking straight up the rocks to the monasteries. If you are lucky enough to find a vacancy here - take it. Stavos the owner has thought of everything and was a great host. We wished we could have stayed longer.
The hotel is very good for a few days trip to Kalambaka or to explore the Meteora. Good location, close to the bus stop and the train station. The staff is very very helpful and kind!
The breakfast is sufficient, the room is equipped beyond expectations ( free air conditioning, soap, etc).
The hotel is a very good choice for the price, it is a 2-star hotel, accordingly, the furniture is a bit old, some rooms face a side street, but the price-value ratio is excellent!
The staff were extremly friendly and helpful. The receptionist explained us the locations of the different monasteries and gave us tips for hikes and excursions. The hotel is very conveniently located, i.e. close to the nearest monasteries, and from our room we had a wonderful view on the rocky landscape and some of the convents. And although the hotel is located right on the road to the Meteora, it was quiet at night. The breakfast buffet was very varied and plentiful.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and greeted us warmly. The room was a good size and we had a fantastic view of Meteora from our large balcony. The room was in a quiet location and the double glazed windows screened any street noise. The hotel was clean and well managed. We booked a package with dinner included and we enjoyed fabulous food with attentive service. The hotel is in an excellent location to visit the monasteries and see the local area.
Perfect and quiet location, the rooms are with a splendid view on the Meteora rocks and 2 of the monastery; the personnel is verry kind and helpful; there is a few verry good tavernas, coffee, market and stores in less than 250m from the hotel; on friday there is a street vegetables market; and last but not least, it is verry practical if you came with your own ot rental car, there is plenty of free places in front of the hotel.
This place reminded me of a mountain retreat…and it was literally on the other side of the railroad tracks from the train station…and only a few blocks off the Main Street. We did a Meteora afternoon tour and a morning tour the next morning…easy access…good food in the main square area. Perfect. And then there was breakfast! In three weeks in Greece…maybe our best experience in lodging, access, overall hospitality.
The hotel itself is very good and clean. Located in a good and quiet area not far from the center of the city and the Meteora. It has also view to Meteora and swimming pool which unfortunately we couldn't use it due to the weather conditions. Rooms are new and spacious with balconies. Very warm and clean. Wifi was working properly. Breakfast was very good and price was also good. Staff is also very kind and helpfull
I loved the family atmosphere at the hotel, the husband and wife in charge are so lovely and will help you out with any request as best they can.
It’s one of the furthest stays from the train station BUT one of the closest to the Monasteries. I did a couple of the guided tours and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that I could sleep that extra 30-40mins more as I was the last to be picked up on the way Meteora.
Best view from the hotel "ever". Front desk person was very helpful. We reached after midnight in rain and lost our way in dark. He answered our call and came over to us to guide us to the hotel. Location is difficult to find in the night, even with Google maps. Breakfast had amazing selection. I'd say staying at this hotel was a highlight of our Greece trip.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was small but enough. Breakfast was simple but perfect; I loved it a lot, even better than a more expensive hotel I stayed at in Athens. They even provided toothbrushes, an amenities kit, and a shoe cleaner, something I have never found in accommodations in Greece. Everything else is perfect.
The hotel room is small, but very cozy and with a good view of the mountains. Everything is nearby, the best restaurant, shops, and a tour desk, where we booked an excellent excursion (30 Euros per person) “Watching the sunset at Meteora.” This is an unforgettable place. as if we had visited another planet.
Nice hotel with lots of character. Very friendly and hospitable owners that could not do enough for you. We had a room that had a great view of Meteora. Great breakfast with local produce.
We choose this hotel because our children could sleep in our room in normal beds, not couch turn bed.
AMAZING!!! Everything about this hotel is lovely. They claim to have the best view out of all hotels and I could believe it. The breakfast was also really good, best one we had in Greece. The staff is very nice and accommodating.
Good location with wonderful view of rocks,
walking distance to Kalampaka town. Hotel staffs were extremely helpful. Clean and comfortable room. Breakfast was great. I definitely recommend this Hotel.
Great location and view, right at the edge of the mountains. Rooms were clean and charming, it’s a nice little boutique hotel in a great location if you are visiting Meteora.
