The food prepared by the host was phenomenal always. All food was procured locally and their goat cheese is absolutely delightful. After dinner, Gio recommended we take a stroll to see the stars and recommended some easy hiking paths to take in the morning after we left. The house was warm throughout despite being an old fashioned house in the mountains with no drafts. The futons unbelievably comfortable. I got to play with goats in the morning so that's always a good day in my book.

The Japanese breakfast was really amazing. This Sumiya has not been renovated since the 70s, however, it doesn't matter because ithe decor added lots of charm and it is certainly a quirky place. I will definitely stay again and recommend others do too as long as you aren't super fussy because it is older style, but for the price that is what you would expect. It is clean and the owners are happy and warm and friendly.

This was such a great stay! Simon and Yumiko, the owners of this small Guesthouse are such lovely and inviting people. Simon met us at Kii-Tanabe station at our pre-discussed time, and drove the 25 min to the remote guesthouse. The atmosphere around the property is serene and so quiet, such a good change in pace compared to Osaka! Simon helped us with our Kumano Kodo walking plan, and then the next morning dropped us off at the start of the hike, another 30 min drive away. There’s a small shrine that you can walk to close to the property. There are two guest rooms on property, we were the only ones there, so it wasn’t loud. We had a microwave, fridge, electric kettle and heater/air conditioner unit in our room. They also provide coffee and green tea and cups! Highly recommend!

What a great place to stay prior to starting the Kumano Kodo trek. Hiroki San is an excellent host. The small touches and thoughtfulness of the house is noticed and we'll received. He is also very kind. Location is wonderful. A 25 minute walk to the trailhead and a few minutes drive to Lawson's for any last minute stuff. The house itself is clean, well decorates, has a full kitchen, washing machine, beer in the fridge, and even umeboshi to try. We'd recommend to anyone looking to relax before the trek. We're really grateful for Hiroki and his hospitality.
